Verse I<\/span>They laughed when maps had struck us out:
\u201cA nation? Footnote \u2014 not to stay!\u201d
But August answered, fierce and proud,
at Warsaw \u2014 resurrection day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verse II<\/span>They laughed: \u201cYou? A port? From dunes?\u201d
A city rose \u2014 its walls stood white.
Then, amid the war and smoke,

Performance note<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Metre.<\/strong> A consistent trochaic octosyllable \u2014 the metre of Konopnicka\u2019s \u201cRota\u201d; songlike, march-like, easy to set to music and to sing together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Compression of the arc.<\/strong> The first verse spans the Partitions and 1920 \u2014 the \u201cresurrection\u201d at Warsaw. The second joins Gdynia and the cellars of 1944 in a single breath. The third is Solidarity, and after it comes the verse of conscience: mockery of our own wounds raises walls between us. The fourth gives voice to the builders through the metonymy of their tools \u2014 hammer, scalpel, chalk, word \u2014 and ends with a table at which bread awaits the scoffers too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final refrain<\/strong> exchanges a single word: \u201cthe hammer will complete\u201d becomes \u201cyour hand will complete this song\u201d \u2014 the work is handed over to those who sing it.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
