The cross we carry together

In every hospital in Poland, someone today took upon themselves a burden they did not have to take. The nurse who stayed on after her shift because a patient just out of surgery was afraid to be alone. The doctor who rang a family after handover to explain something further. The paramedic who, after twelve hours, went out on one more call because the dispatcher asked. The teacher who noticed that a sixteen-year-old had not eaten in the canteen for the third day running. The neighbour who drove an elderly lady to her appointment because the ambulance was two hours late.

None of these acts will be noticed by an algorithm. None will appear in a feed. None can be measured by a click.

And yet it is by these acts — not by politics, not by declarations, not by media combat — that the Polish health system is sustained. And, more broadly, everything worthy of the name society.

This is the cross of which that call from two thousand years ago speaks. A concrete burden. Daily. Unglamorous. Unchosen. Without it, all the rest — the best technologies, the wisest regulations, the newest medicines — will not work.

II. Why we must support one another — the answer the system does not want to hear

Because without it we shall fall.

The sentence sounds dramatic, but it is mathematical. The Polish healthcare system today operates at the limit of endurance of the people who run it. Doctors burnt out. Nurses leaving. Paramedics in permanent shortage. Young residents asking whether to stay. Patients lost between five outpatient clinics, four IT systems and three insurers.

And alongside — a generation of teenagers who, for the first time in history, have poorer mental health than their parents had at the same age. Loneliness, anxiety, depression. Statistics that only ten years ago would have been regarded as a civilisational alarm now scroll past as background.

In this context the question “why must we support one another?” ceases to be philosophical. It becomes a question of survival — and not only physical survival. The survival of the fabric that binds people into an organism capable of acting.

Just Council answers simply: we do not support one another because it is pleasing. We support one another because without it everything else falls apart.

III. “Deny himself” — in the consulting room, in the classroom, on the staircase

The first part of the call — to deny oneself — means something very concrete in the practice of a support system.

A doctor who denies himself is a doctor who can say to a patient, “I don’t know, but I shall find out.” Not one who hides behind authority. Not one who treats the patient as a threat to his shift. One who sets his ego aside and remains in the role of service.

A nurse who denies herself is a nurse who has the courage to stop a colleague’s error — without aggression, without humiliation, because she knows that what is at stake is the patient, not position. This is precisely the reflex that Just Culture calls safe speaking up (speak-up safety), and without which modern medicine does not exist.

A teacher who denies himself is one who notices the teenager at the back of the room instead of concentrating on keeping order in the class. One who asks rather than judges.

A parent who denies himself is one who puts down the phone when a child begins to speak.

A neighbour who denies himself is one who knocks, though he could pretend he had not heard.

In all these cases the mechanism is the same: to step out of the role of protagonist of one’s own day. To make room for another human being. Without this movement no support system exists. With it — one exists even when the budget is crumbling and the regulations contradict one another.

IV. Thirteen values on duty

The Just Council Doctrine rests on thirteen values. Not as a list, but as a fabric. Let us show them as they work in practice — on a real shift, in a real school, on a real staircase.

Justice is not a slogan. It is a question: does a grandmother from a small village have real access to a specialist, or only theoretical access? Does a sixteen-year-old from a deprived neighbourhood receive psychological help before he ends up in A&E?

Proportionality is the ability to weigh. A doctor who distinguishes an emergency from hysteria, but who also distinguishes a patient’s genuine fear from his own fatigue.

Responsibility — and here Just Culture returns in full force — is the ability to respond, not a hunt for the guilty. A system in which a nurse is afraid to admit a mistake is a system in which a patient will die because the mistake will be repeated. This is not sentiment; it is data.

Compassion with discernment — because emotion alone burns people out, and analysis alone dehumanises. A health professional learns this throughout a lifetime.

Moral neutrality of analysis — the foundation of Just Culture. First understand how it happened. Only then ask questions about blame. Without this order there is no learning.

Transparency — towards the patient, towards the team, towards oneself. Obscurity is the father of distrust.

Learning — every incident, every complaint, every death that could not be prevented is material for learning. Or it is nothing, and then we fail the next patient.

Trust — the most precious currency in medicine. When a patient stops trusting, he stops being treated. When a doctor stops trusting the system, he begins to protect himself instead of treating.

Dignity — the patient on the stretcher is a person, not a case. So is the doctor in the twenty-fourth hour of work.

Courage — to tell a family the truth. To report an error to a superior. To stay with the dying when it would be easier to leave.

Humility — to admit that this is not my speciality. To refer onwards. To ask a junior resident whether he saw something I failed to notice.

Solidarity — between wards, between facilities, between professional generations. Without it every hospital becomes an island, and the system loses its coherence.

Hope — the value without which no one can work thirty years in oncology.

These are thirteen values which together yield one thing: the capacity to be alongside a person when they are in pain.

V. Young people — a generation we must not lose

When we say young people, we are speaking of people who came into the world at a time when the screen was a second parent. Of people who have never known a world without the algorithm. Of people learning adulthood in conditions in which no earlier generation was ever taught it.

European and Polish statistics are consistent and disturbing. The number of teenagers reporting anxiety, depression and loneliness is rising. The number of suicide attempts is rising. Sleep is getting shorter. Attention spans are getting shorter. The number of close peer relationships is falling — while the number of “online contacts” is growing.

What does Just Council say to those who work with young people — parents, teachers, family doctors, psychologists, coaches, pastors, neighbours?

First: be present for longer than is comfortable. A young person who feels that an adult stays with them when the subject becomes difficult receives something an algorithm will never give them: the experience of mattering without having to perform.

Second: do not pretend to know everything. An adult’s humility builds trust faster than any authority.

Third: show that values are not decoration. A teenager senses hypocrisy in a second. If he sees that the adults around him profess solidarity yet pass by their neighbour, he learns that solidarity is an empty word. If he sees that adults ask him how he is, and truly listen, he learns that being human is possible.

Fourth: give him a cross. It sounds paradoxical. And yet young people burn out not from an excess of duties, but from a lack of meaning. Drawing a teenager into real responsibility — helping an elderly neighbour, looking after younger siblings, volunteering in a hospice, taking a turn on duty in the school first-aid club — gives him something no TikTok will give. It gives him the sense that his life carries weight.

VI. Joined together, not divided — why this is not naivety

In Polish public discourse, political division has become a reflex. The first question we ask a stranger is not “who are you?” but “whose side are you on?”

Just Council rejects this logic not out of naivety, but out of sober calculation.

A patient in an ambulance has no political views at the moment he is being resuscitated. The paramedic resuscitating him does not ask about his views before inserting a cannula. The oncologist taking yet another ninety-year-old patient through chemotherapy does not check her voting preferences.

This is the foundation of the civilisation that Europe learnt over a thousand years: in the places where a human being is most fragile, politics ends and humanity begins.

When this foundation crumbles — and in many countries it is already crumbling — everything crumbles. Doctors stop trusting one another. Patients stop trusting doctors. Neighbours stop greeting one another. Parents stop talking to their own children, because the children “vote differently”.

Just Council says it plainly: political division is the luxury of a society that does not remember what a crisis looks like. And we in Europe remember all too well. Our grandparents’ generation remembered why a neighbour matters more than an ideology. It is our duty to hand that memory on to our children.

VII. What we give our children — the hardest question of this manifesto

We shall leave them more than we think. And less than we would wish.

We shall leave them a world with more tools and less trust. With better medicine and a weaker capacity for being together. With access to every piece of information and a deficit of wisdom.

What this manifesto is about is the one thing we can leave them whole — because it does not depend on budgets, regulation, technology or politics. We can leave them an example.

The example of a person who denies himself when someone beside him is suffering. The example of a professional who treats their profession as a vocation, not a contract. The example of a neighbour who knocks. The example of a parent who puts down the phone. The example of a community in which no one dies alone, because there is always someone alongside.

No platform will replace this example. This example cannot be generated. It can only be handed on — through one’s own life, one’s own conduct, one’s own everyday.

And this is the gravest thing carried by the call “take up his cross, and follow me”. Because children do not imitate what we say. They imitate what we do when we think no one is watching.

VIII. The Just Council practical agenda — for everyone, whatever their role

A manifesto that does not end in action is mere literature. That is why Just Council frames this call concretely — for different roles, in a single direction.

For the health professional. Create within your team a space for safe speaking up. The first principle of Just Culture: an error reported is a gift. An error concealed is a threat. Respond in the opposite way to what your defensive instinct dictates.

For the patient and their family. Treat the health professional as a human being, not a machine. Ask, listen, give thanks. This is not politeness — it is the fuel on which run the people upon whom your life depends.

For the parent. Set aside fifteen screen-free minutes a day with each child. No more. Do not lecture. Simply be alongside.

For the teacher. Each week choose one pupil whom you usually do not notice, and ask them how they are — truly ask. Three years of such practice will rebuild a school.

For the employer. Ask your team when they last had a day on which they felt their work mattered. The answer will show you what you are really doing with their lives.

For the neighbour. Find out who lives next door. A name. A situation. One telephone number. One gesture to begin with. That is enough to start building the community that Poland needs more urgently than most reforms.

For the young person. Find one person older than yourself whom you will help regularly, without payment. It will teach you more than ten self-development courses.

For everyone. Every evening, ask yourself one question: whose cross did I carry today? If the answer is “no one’s” — you have a new day tomorrow to change that.

IX. The Just Council manifesto — in three sentences

First. A support system — in health, in the family, in the neighbourhood, between generations — is not built from budgets, institutions or regulations. It is built from daily acts of self-denial undertaken by people who need not have undertaken them.

Second. Our understanding of one another — of doctor and patient, teacher and pupil, parent and child, neighbour and neighbour — is the practical infrastructure of civilisation. Without it nothing else works. With it, not even a crisis will break us.

Third. What we give, jointly and together, to our children, our neighbours and the generations to come is the one thing that neither the algorithm, nor politics, nor history will take from us: the example of a community that does not leave a person alone.

A cross we carry together is lighter than one we would carry apart. And a community that understands this is the only one that will endure.

— Just Council

Matt 16:24 (Bible.com)

A Just Council manifesto on a support system in healthcare that cannot be bought: the cross we carry together, thirteen values on duty, and the example we leave to our children.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[39,44
67,56,49,57,55
post-357","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized-en-us","category-manifestos","tag-compassion-with-discernment-en","tag-healthcare-en","tag-just-council-en","tag-just-culture-en","tag-solidarity-en

Neighbour, Doctor, Child — a Shared Path | Just Council

<meta name="author" content="Michał P.
